123 Roofing FAQs:

Is it OK to put new roof shingles over old ones?

Yes, when the conditions are right. Known as re-roofing, it’s the simplest and least expensive approach to improving your roof’s appearance. In order to restore the aesthetic appeal of your home and to offer an additional layer of protection to prevent leaks from entering your home, new shingles are applied over the old ones when having your home re-roofed.

Your roof must first meet the following requirements for a re-roofing job:

  • Your current roof must be asphalt shingles, as they are the only roofing material that can be used for re-roofing.
  • There can’t be any significant warping of the current layer of shingles, as shingles are meant to be laid flat.

If your current roof meets these requirements, it can be eligible for re-roofing. Adding a new layer of shingles is the ideal option if the current roof is in good shape and the primary issue is the appearance of the roof.

However, while this is, without a doubt, the simplest and most affordable way to fix a roof’s appearance, it will not last as long as a complete roof replacement. Also, since the initial layer of shingles won’t be removed, your roofing contractors will not be able to spot or detect any underlying indicators of roof deterioration beneath them.

Furthermore, several manufacturers and roofing types require that a roof still covered by warranties be completely removed in order to adhere to the warranty’s guidelines and restrictions. Always check the requirements of your roof’s warranty if it is still covered by one.

How long will a re-roof last after finished?

On average, asphalt shingles will last 15-30 years. A re-roof can last just as long, but it also may not. There are many factors that can affect how long your roof will last, including how often you perform regular roof maintenance, the weather, and whether the new roof layer was installed correctly.

If you choose 123 Roofing as your trusted and accredited roofing company, our partnership goes far beyond simply rebuilding your roof. For the next 15 years, we personally guarantee the stability of your roof and the quality of our work.

How many layers go on a new roof?

Your roof may have up to two layers of shingles. After that, they will need to be removed, and you’ll need to have a whole new roof installed instead.

Typically, roofing structures are constructed with the weight of a single layer of shingles in mind, plus any potential snow accumulation. So, by adding another layer, the roof would then weigh twice as much as before. While most roofing structures can handle this, they are not built to withstand more weight than that, which is why there is a maximum limit of two layers of shingles. Too much weight on your roof could potentially hasten the deterioration of the roofing system.

What are the things that you should not do on a roof?

Sometimes, with the best intentions, a homeowner can damage their roof by doing things they shouldn’t. Here’s a list of things you should not do to your roof:

  • Pull up shingles to look for leaks or damage. This can break the seal and end up causing leaks.
  • Leave your roof or gutters full of debris. When water cannot properly drain, it can dam up and leak into the house.
  • Walk or sit on your roof. Not only is it a risk to your own safety, but it can also damage the shingles, affecting the longevity of your roof. Instead, use a taller ladder to clean your gutters or hang Christmas decor or an extendable arm grabber to reach trapped toys or branches.
  • Powerwash it. The power behind the water will remove the mineral granules protecting your singles from things like the weather, heat, sun, and more, decreasing the lifespan of your roof.
  • Cut holes into your roof. If you want to install a skylight or ventilation system, contact a professional to ensure it is done correctly to prevent leaks.
  • Install new shingles over damaged ones. While it is cheaper to re-roof instead of replacing a roof, if the first layer of shingles is damaged, they must be replaced to prevent further damage.
  • Install a basketball hoop or satellite dish. Screwing bolts into your roof creates an opportunity for leaks. Furthermore, having a basketball repeatedly bounce off of the roof and gutters can cause damage as well.

What time of year is the cheapest to replace the roof?

While the spring, summer and fall months are best for roofing, expert contractors can extend their work season and occasionally even roof when snow flurries are approaching. Since the demand is higher during peak roofing season, you will likely enjoy lower prices and less wait time if you’re willing to hire during the off-season. So, consider hiring a roofing company to do your roof in the early spring or early winter to enjoy those savings!
